Nature Can Teach Us How To be Still

How meditation can learn you how to be still

"Take a walk with a turtle. And behold the world in pause." -Bruce Feiler

It’s a very common, and discouraging, occurrence. I think it happens because the only time we slow ourselves down and fully come into stillness is when we are going to bed. So, our bodies immediately go into sleep mode when we have a moment of stillness.

Many of us are habituated to movement, activity, noise, and busyness. It’s hard to find a moment to pause. To be still. To breathe.

For those that do find a moment of outer stillness, the inner world is often not so still. I hear many folks say, “I can’t meditate because I can’t calm my mind” or “I can’t get rid of thoughts.” And yet, something tells us that we need to slow down. We need to find some stillness. We need to pause and breathe. But how?

I find nature provides me with an easy entry point into stillness. Sitting in nature helps calm my mind and body. Even imagining nature or snuggling my pets can be enough.

As we enter into the cold and dark part of our year, nature brings us an outer stillness that we can use to support a new habit of intentional pause, intentional quiet, and through regular practice, we might taste inner stillness as well.

Join us this month, in our gatherings and online community, as we explore stillness practices. You’ll discover how to create a pause in your life … and learn how it can help you end the cycle of toxic thoughts.
